Ferries, parking, and luggage

Getting to Mackinac Island

Mackinac is straightforward once you decide which mainland dock you want, how much you are really carrying, and whether the island is the trip or just one stop inside something bigger.

Arrival map

Mackinaw City sets up the Mackinac Island arrival.

This map shows the main arrival choices before the rest of the trip gets locked in. Mackinaw City is the primary approach to compare first. St. Ignace is the helpful backup or add-on choice. The lines are planning corridors, not turn-by-turn road geometry, so use live directions before you drive.

  • Tap a marker to see how each town fits the drive.
  • Solid line is the main approach; dashed lines are alternate regional approaches.

Choose the mainland side that fits your drive

Mackinaw City and St. Ignace can both work. The best choice is often just the one that shortens the rest of your trip instead of adding unnecessary extra road time before the ferry even starts.

Parking and baggage are part of the travel day

Your car does not come with you, so parking costs, baggage handling, and dock timing should be treated as real logistics, not little details you can improvise while eating an ice cream cone.

Arrival basics

  • Pack lighter than you would for a normal drive-up hotel stay.
  • If Mackinac is the main event, stay on the island and remove one whole layer of ferry hassle.
  • Build a little slack into your arrival and departure instead of treating the ferry like a city subway.
  • If you are adding bikes, dinner, and hotel check-in on day one, keep the rest of the arrival day simple.
